I am sure you don’t want to have a stressful Christmas nor start the new year with debt.
But for many, "the most wonderful time of the year" can quickly turn into a financial nightmare.
The pressure is real. In 2025, holiday spending hit record highs, with the average American spending nearly $990 on Christmas gifts and festivities.
This 'consumerism trap' is designed to make us overspend, especially with the rise of 'Buy Now, Pay Later' apps that tempt us to trade our future peace for a temporary purchase.
Have you ever been shopping online and seen that "add these items for 25% off" pop-up right before you checkout?
We click "add to cart" with a generous heart, only to feel a wave of guilt and anxiety on December 29th when the credit card statement arrives.
As a Christian entrepreneur, your finances are part of your family legacy.
Saving isn't just about the bank account; it’s about being "available" and unburdened for what God wants you to do.
Let’s look at how to save money this Christmas by shifting from panic to proactive stewardship.
Are you ready to learn how to save money this christmas!
1. Proactive stewardship: Planning with purpose
Stewardship starts long before you enter a store. To enjoy Christmas without the guilt, you need a strategy that protects your peace.
The Golden Rules: Write your list, set a budget, and track every expense.
The Savings Timeline: If you need $1,000 for Christmas, that is only $85 a month if you start in January. If you're starting later, try a 12-week money-saving challenge in September.
The Goal: Being proactive means having the cash available before the sales start. I aim to have my funds ready by Black Friday so I can snag the best deals without touching my business capital.
2. Spend wisely: The strategy of a wise manager
Every year, we have the same five categories to manage: travel, food, decorations, gifts, and miscellaneous.
To save money, ask yourself these three stewardship questions:
How will I find the extra cash? Can you sell items on Facebook Marketplace, cancel a subscription you don't use, or commit to dining in during October to save for the big feast?
Who is truly on my list? Be intentional about who you are buying for. (Note for entrepreneurs: If you’re buying gifts as a business expense, check with your accountant first to ensure you're following tax guidelines correctly!)
Where is the best price? Use cashback tools like Rakuten. It is essentially free money for purchases you were already going to make.
3. Mindful gifting vs. obligatory spending
This is a huge differentiator for a good relationship with money.
Many of us overspend on toys or gadgets that lose interest within a week.
Instead, consider the 5 Love Languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, quality time, physical touch, and receiving gifts.
If your loved one’s language is quality time, they would likely value a "movie night in" or a shared experience more than an expensive box from a shelf.
I remember one year our family decided to skip traditional gifts and instead sent money to buy chickens for a family in Africa. That was money well spent!
4. Shift your mindset: Reclaiming the season
Christmas has been hijacked by consumerism, but it was never meant to be about the presents.
It is about celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and spending time with those we love.
When you shift your mindset from "I must buy" to "I am here to steward and connect," the pressure vanishes.
You break the cycle of "keeping up" and start a new, fun money habit that focuses on presence over presents.
Your financial peace is a gift to your family
Remember, Christmas is only one day. You do not have to go broke to show your family that you love them.
By shifting your mindset and practicing proactive stewardship, you can start the new year with a clear head and a full heart.
