Afraid to Invest in Yourself as a Christian Entrepreneur? When “Being Responsible” Keeps You Stuck

Do you find yourself thinking:
“I can’t invest in myself right now… I have debt. I need to pay that off first.”
If so, I want to gently speak to you for a moment.
That thought can feel responsible.
Even wise.
And sometimes, it is.
There are seasons where focusing on paying down debt and being disciplined with your finances is exactly what stewardship looks like.
But not every moment labeled “wisdom” is actually wisdom.
Sometimes, it’s something else underneath.
If you are afraid to invest in yourself as a Christian entrepreneur, I hopt this will help you shift your money mindset.
When “being responsible” keeps you stuck
I had someone say this to me recently:
“I thought your program looked amazing… but I didn’t look into it further because I have debt. I told myself I need to pay that off first.”
That response makes sense.
When you’re in debt, it can feel like the only responsible choice is to pause everything else. To wait.
To fix everything before making any new decisions.
If that’s something you’ve been thinking too, you’re not alone.
And while that can be wise in some situations… it’s still worth asking:
What is shaping this decision?
But what I often see—quietly, behind the scenes—is this:
The debt isn’t the only issue. It’s the relationship with money.
The hesitation. The avoidance. The second-guessing.
And those patterns don’t automatically disappear when the debt is gone.
A pattern many Christian women don’t realize they’re in
Another woman once shared with me:
“I’m great at spending money that just sits… I tend to get sidetracked to avoid doing what I should be doing.”
She kept buying things that felt productive… But they didn’t move her forward.
A few weeks later, she said:
“Debt has been consuming my mind lately… I hate that I keep finding myself back in the same place.”
That’s the cycle: Spend → Avoid → Regret → Repeat
And if that feels familiar, you’re not alone.
And maybe you’ve felt it too.
For many women, this isn’t just a money problem.
It’s a pattern shaped by mindset, habits, and avoidance.
Is it wisdom… or fear?
This isn’t to say that waiting is always unwise.
There are seasons where that is the right and faithful decision.
Scripture calls us to be faithful stewards, to count the cost, and to act with discernment.
But it’s important to ask honestly:
Is this wisdom… or is it fear keeping me from moving forward?
Because sometimes what looks like responsibility is actually hesitation.
There’s a different voice that can sound very similar to wisdom: Fear.
Fear can sound like:
“Wait until everything is perfect”
“You can’t make a mistake again”
“Now is not the time”
“You’re not ready”
And when fear is leading, it often keeps you in the same place.
Not because you lack discipline…
but because you’re protecting yourself from disappointment.
An important layer: what if it’s not just about money?
Sometimes, beneath the hesitation to invest…
there may be another layer present. Not always.
But sometimes.
A quiet belief that says:
“I shouldn’t spend money on myself.”
“I’m not ready.”
“I need to fix everything first.”
Sometimes even:
“I’m not worth investing in.”
This isn’t the root for everyone.
This doesn’t show up loudly. But it shapes decisions more than we realize.
But it can be one of the voices in the background.
And it often goes unnoticed because it feels so normal.
Why this matters
Because what you believe about yourself…
influences how you handle:
money
opportunities
growth
and obedience to what God may be leading you into
When fear, past disappointment, or hesitation leads your decisions…
it doesn’t just affect your finances.
It affects your life.
The real question to ask if Afraid to invest in yourself as a Christian entrepreneur!
So the question isn’t:
“Should I pay off debt first?”
The deeper question is:
What is actually keeping me stuck right now?
Is it the debt itself?
Or is it how you think, feel, and respond to money?
What actually creates change
Not all of my clients come in with debt.
But the ones who do often experience some of the biggest shifts—quickly.
Not because we focus on “fixing” the numbers first.
But because they stop avoiding them.
They begin to:
look at their numbers without fear
make decisions instead of delaying them
stop using spending to manage how they feel
show up consistently in their business instead of starting and stopping
And as that changes…
Their income often begins to grow.
Their confidence increases.
Their relationship with money becomes steady and calm.
What Scripture reminds us
Scripture calls us to renew our minds.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…” (Romans 12:2)
Not once everything is in order.
But right in the middle of real life.
Right in the middle of:
imperfect numbers
uncertain decisions
situations that don’t feel “ready”
Renewal is not about waiting until everything is fixed.
It’s about allowing God’s truth to reshape how you think… even in the middle of debt, uncertainty, or past mistakes.
A gentle challenge if you are afraid to invest in yourself Christian entrepreneur
I’m not here to tell you what you should do.
But I do want to gently challenge this:
Don’t assume that waiting will change the pattern.
Because often, it doesn’t.
The same thinking that keeps you in hesitation now can follow you into your next season—just with different numbers.
A grounded question to consider
If you’ve been telling yourself:
“I’ll do this later”
“I’ll invest when things feel better”
Pause and ask yourself honestly:
What is actually guiding your decision right now?
Wisdom?
Fear?
Past disappointment?
Or a combination of all three?
There’s no condemnation in asking that question. Only clarity.
Final encouragement
You don’t need to rush.
And you don’t need to force anything.
But you also don’t have to stay stuck in a cycle that keeps you in the same place.
There is a way to make decisions with clarity, peace, and wisdom…
while growing in how you steward what God has entrusted to you.
If this resonates with you, take time to reflect and bring it before the Lord.
He gives wisdom generously (James 1:5). And He is faithful to lead you in truth.
Take care
